What Motivates People? What the research says
Interested in what or how to motivate people? Do you think that rewards and punishment work? And that rewards are always about money? If you do, there's some very interesting research that says you're wrong. If the task is purely mechanical, then money rewards do work. But as soon as even the most basic of cognitive skills are involved, the picture changes. Not only does money not work - it actually has the opposite effect! I know, hard to believe. But the science is fascinating and from highly respectable institutions. To see it, check out this presentation on Youtube. Excellent, graphic, even amusing, and well worth 10 minutes.
